Nottingham’s Sheku Kanneh-Mason wins top classical album of 2020 in UK’s Official Chart

Nottingham’s Sheku Kanneh-Mason has continued his string of successes by officially being awarded the top classical album of 2020.

Kanneh-Mason, 21, released his album, Elgar, in January 2020 and – according to the Official Albums Charts – he has ended the year with the top album in the Specialist Classical Chart.

The chart is reserved for albums where the contents are entirely derived from classical plays, dances or other forms including music.

The talented cellist released the album when he was only 20 and the reception to the album has made him the highest-charting cellist of all time in the UK when it peaked at number 8 in the top 10 of the Official Albums Chart.

Speaking of his latest accolade, he said: “I’m so honoured to receive this award for the top album in the Specialist Classical Chart of 2020.

“2020 has been a very difficult year for many people but what it’s shown is how much we need music, how much we need performers and recordings, and it’s more important than ever to keep supporting the arts, classical music and music in general.

“It was such a fun experience to be able to share this album with some really close musicians to me, my friends, my mentors, and also an orchestra and conductor that I have really admired. It is really special.

“I hope to be performing much more in 2021, thank you to everyone who supported this album”.

The former BBC Young Musician who shot to global stardom as guest performer at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, also released an album with his six siblings in November titled ‘Carnival’ which featured spoken poetry from Olivia Colman.

The UK Classical Charts are three record charts based on classical music in the UK; the Classical Artist Albums Chart, the Classical Compilation Albums Chart and the Specialist Classical Albums Chart.
